HELLO AND WELCOME
Welcome to all our regular supporters and to anyone who's seeing a MAD Company pantomime for the first time. This is our second visit to Sumberland with the 'Sleeping Beauty' but even if you saw it the first time round, you probably won't recognize it!
Pantomime, like everything, has to move with the times and even though the stories remain similar to the fairy stories we grew up with, the jokes, the songs, the costumes, the scenery and the props all have to be remade, brought up to date and given new life. In saying that, we try to ensure that all the traditional elements of Pantomime are in good supply.
In order that we can maintain both our standard and our audiences, we'd love to hear what you think about our productions, so do let us know. If you didn't find a form at the performance, email us.

On behalf of the Methodist Amateur Dramatic Company, I would like to welcome you all and invite you to sit back, relax, and enjoy our production of 'The Sleping Beauty'.

CAST
King Duvet Tony Robertson Queen Pillowslips Jan Treacher-Evans
Again a relative newcomer to the MAD Company, Tony has more than proved his worth. Following his hugely successful debut in Aladdin, Tony gave a wonderful performance in ‘See No Evil. Hear No Evil’ last June and this year has the envious task of playing opposite the rather scary Queen. A great team player, Tony can also be found painting scenery and delighting (!) us all with his huge collection of puns! Jan gave an outstanding performance in ‘See No Evil. Hear No Evil’ last summer and obviously relishes the ‘spirited’ roles. An old hand at panto, this year she once again reveals her many talents as she takes on the role of the rather formidable (but soft and cuddly underneath) Queen Pillowslips.
Princess Sweetdreams Claire Carrig Prince Valance Maggie Tarpey
Claire has the dubious(!) honour of having been in each of our twelve pantomimes - and she’s still only seventeen. After eleven years in the children’s chorus Claire has joined the adult cast and makes her principal debut as Principal Girl! Claire is studying dance and drama at college and, we think you’ll agree, makes a delightful Sleeping Beauty. Like so many members of The MAD Company, Maggie’s talents don’t just involve acting - she’s also responsible for all of Nanny Napalot’s incredible costumes This year, however, we’ve managed to persuade her to don the fishnets and take on the role of the gorgeous Prince Valance. And she only wanted to be a tree!
Spit, a Palace Guard Richard Merriman Polish, a Palace Guard Will Rawlings
Richard joined us last year and gave a stupendous MAD Company debut as Wishee Washee in Aladdin. Joining us for ‘See No Evil. Hear No Evil’, his enthusiasm shows no bounds (as those patrons of the Royal Anchor will attest!) and this year sees him using his comic talents in the role of one of the Palace guards. And if you have a headache at the interval, you’ll know whom to blame! Will has delighted MAD Company audiences for the last few years in a variety of comic roles, and as the romantic lead in ‘See No Evil. Hear No Evil’ charmed everyone with his outstanding singing voice. Last year he scored a hit as the very camp ‘Genie of the Lamp’ and this year he joins Richard guarding the Palace or is it polishing the Palace?
Fairy Daffodil Mandy Godridge Fairy Marigold Mick Selley
Mandy has played many assorted roles over the years and can turn her hand to almost anything.
Not content with playing one of the leads in our summer show, she has been a Maharajah, a Postmistress, a Washerwoman and many other characters. This year Mandy’s true enthusiasm  shines through as we see her as the rather pompous Fairy Daffodil
Mick, like Jackie, is revisiting the role he played to perfection in our original production of The Sleeping Beauty, which was his debut on stage with the MAD Company. Also responsible for much of the great scenery in our shows, Mick is at his happiest prancing about the stage in a skirt - hence this year’s Fairy Marigold.
Fairy Carnation Christopher Turner Fairy Nettle Vanessa Breach
Poor Christopher -just joined the MAD Company to help out with the scenery, he now finds himself Props Manager and also onstage in a tutu of all things! He’s still not quite sure how it happened but we’re very pleased it did. Fairy Carnation? Not in your wildest dreams, Christopher
Nanny Napalot Derek Laybourne Tickles, the Jester Jackie Bruce
A relative newcomer to the MAD Company, Derek joined us for last year’s panto with the enviable role as the back end of the camel! Even in such a small role - well quite large actually - Derek’s talent shone through, and having joined us for ‘See No Evil. Hear No Evil’ has taken on the role of Nanny Napalot this year~ I think we have a new star in the making. An extremely talented all-rounder, this year Jackie has flung away the fishnets (not for long. I bet) and revisits the role of the Court Jester, a part she played so stunningly in our first production of ‘Sleeping Beauty’ many years ago. Jackie is a great team member, has been involved with the scenery again this year, and within the MAD Company, has the honour of being ‘Secretary of Everything’.
Dino Mary West The Dalek Master Brian Simmons
Little did we know that it would take a dinosaur to drag Mary out of acting retirement!
Concentrating mostly behind the scenes for the last few years, Mary has been persuaded once more to tread the boards and we are delighted to welcome her back on stage. Mary is another lady with endless talents though - many of our fabulous costumes are made by her - and her fruitcake -WOW!
One of the most important elements of a successful drama group rehearsal is ... the coffee break!Along with taking all the wonderful photographs~ making signs, providing us with copious trivia (his most endearing trait!) Brian has, this year, joined us on stage playing a role he no doubt thinks he is made for — the Master of the Universe! Welcome Brian.
